In 1964 the foundation of Mersey Kidney Research (MKR) established Liverpool as a leader in the practice of home dialysis. Its present remit is to support research into disease of the kidney, bladder and urinary tract.

Current research work is being funded in the departments of Organ Transplantation, Urology and Nephrology, at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital (RLUH) as well as occasional support of relevant work in certain departments of Liverpool University.
