Your Challenge...

Join us on this exciting challenge as we ride the tribal trails and royal pathways through India's colourful “Land of the Kings” – Rajasthan.  Our Indian Cycle Challenge will provide us with an ‘off-the-beaten-track’ cycling adventure, through some of the best hill and desert landscapes that Rajasthan has to offer. We’ll cover a total distance of 400km over 6 consecutive days in the saddle through this fascinating region of India. In addition to experiencing India at it’s best – by bike – we’ll also have opportunities to explore the amazing painted “havelis” (mansions) of Shekawati - a remote area where rich merchants once aimed to outdo each other by painting their homes in ever more exuberant styles. Time has largely stood still since this extravagant heyday, making this a fascinating area in which to hold this cycling challenge.

From Shekawati we head further in to rural Rajasthan, an area of stunning desert landscapes, dotted with villages of vibrant colour - a complete contrast to the world-renowned sights of Delhi, Jaipur and the Taj Mahal; with which we end our Cycle Challenge!

Come and cycle “The Land of the Kings”…

Your Itinerary...

Day 1
We depart the UK on our overnight flight to Delhi.

Day 2
We’ll be met at Delhi airport and taken by coach directly to the Midway Hotel, Behror, a 2½ hour drive. After lunch we’ll test ride and fit the bikes, which will have been transported to the hotel in readiness for our ride, and then spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 3
Following breakfast we’ll drive for 2 hours to our start point in Singhana. From here we cycle to Jhunjhunu, the gateway to the Shekawati Region on flat, well surfaced roads. As we cycle away from the main road the beginnings of the Great Thar Desert come in to view, interspersed with the rolling green Khertri Hills.

Cycling distance – 45km

Day 4
Today we cycle from Jhunjhunu to Mahansar, along quiet rural roads unaccustomed to heavy traffic. We should reach our hotel by lunchtime, meaning there’ll be time to explore the sights of Mahansar in the afternoon, which include a Shiva temple, a painted haveli and a ballroom!

Tonight we stay in a Fawlty Towerseque old fort, with amazing food and home distilled schnapps.

Cycling distance – 45km

Day 5
Our cycling today takes us through stunning desert landscapes to Nawalgarh, stopping in Mandawa, the heart of the region, for lunch and a look around the numerous painted havelis for which the town is justifiably famous. We spend the night in luxurious mud-walled rooms on an eco farm serving home produced organic food, and owned by one of the region’s most enthusiastic cyclists!

Cycling distance – 60 km

Day 6
We push on, cycling to Danta through classic Rajasthani villages, well away from the established tourist routes.  In Danta we stay in a completely untouched old fort in the middle of a fascinating town, home to the former Maharaja of the entire surrounding area.

Cycling distance - 85km

Day 7
Today we continue our cycling challenge and bike to Sambhar Salt Lake, approached through the Aravalli Hills. This is one of the more remote and less inhabited areas of Rajasthan, the landscape flat all the way to the horizon, beautifully barren. We’ll pass picturesque salt pans and have some sand tracks to negotiate before we get to the lake itself. Tonight we camp in the middle of a vast expanse of white salt, at least 20 miles wide!

Cycling distance - 75km

Day 8
Following breakfast, we don our helmets one last time and cycle to Pachewar, a flat route on well surfaced roads. There we’ll finish the ride and eat in the stunning fort, once home to the Maharaja of Pachewar but now run as a heritage hotel, before boarding our coach for the drive to Jaipur.

Once in Jaipur we’ll settle in to our hotel before enjoying a suitably celebratory dinner!

Cycling distance - 85km

Day 9
We’ll have a quick look at Amber Fort, one of the most impressive sights in Rajasthan, as we pass by on our way to Agra, a 5 hour drive away. Once there we’ll visit the magnificent Taj Mahal, lingering to watch the sun go down behind this iconic monument before boarding the express train to Delhi, where we’ll spend the night.

Day 10
Depending on flight times, we’ll have some free time in Delhi, before transferring to Delhi airport for our flights home.
