Bubble Babies are born without an immune system. They cannot fight infection. Even the simplest cold passed on by a mothers kiss can kill them. Without treatment they will die before thier first birthday. These babies have a rare condition called Severe Combined Immunodeficiency, the result of a genetic defect.

The Children’s Bone Marrow Transplant Unit in Newcastle upon Tyne is only one of two specialised centres in the British Isles that can give these precious babies a chance of life and the good news is that more than 80% of these children go home to live a normal life. This great achievement is thanks to research and the expertise of the staff in the Bubble Unit.

And thanks too, to the people who give to the Foundation to provide much needed state-of-the-art equipment, research and support for the families.
