Maggie Higgins Memorial School

We first opened for business in 2003, and have been serving children in India ever since.

We started off very small, in fact it was just one person, Marga Welsh, who went to India to have a break from the rat race of life in England. When she got there she decided to try and teach some of the children English. At first there were only a couple of children, then word spread and slowly more and more children appeared.

Marga soon realised that she couldn’t leave it there, she had to make the school bigger, make it official. After returning to the UK, Marga raised money and built a school, which is what the children are in today. There are over 450 children at the school now and it is getting bigger.

We now have 2 buildings, and look after children aged between 3 and 11. All money raised by, and donated to, our charity is spent on the education of these children, who would otherwise not go to school. These children all live in a very rural area in Southern India called Ananandal village, near Tiruvanamalai. Most of the children who attend our school, live in mud huts.

We provide each child with transport to and from school, each child receives a uniform at the start of the new school year (some of our children wear their uniform at the weekends, as they have no other clothes).

We are a very small charity, and have no costs what so ever in the UK. Thank you for reading this about our school if you would like any more information or you would like to help the school in any way please contact me, Marga Welsh at maggiehigginsschool@gmail.com or visit our Facebook Group Page.
