How to Prepare for a Cycle Challenge as a Beginner: Judy’s Story Getting Started!

How to Prepare for a Cycle Challenge as a Beginner: Judy’s Story Getting Started!

Are you thinking about taking on a charity challenge but not quite sure where to start—or whether you’re capable of doing it at all?

You’re not alone.

Many people dream of doing something extraordinary for a cause close to their heart, but feel intimidated by the training or the unknowns. The truth is: with the right preparation and determination, you are absolutely capable of taking on a charity or fundraising challenge.

Our events are designed to test you, push past your limits, and reveal strength you didn’t even know you had. And to prove that even complete beginners can conquer a challenge, we spoke to someone who’s been through it all this year...

Meet Judy — Our Charity Accounts Officer Taking on the Sri Lanka Cycle!

This year, our very own Charity Officer, Judy, is taking on our Sri Lanka Cycle Challenge!

The challenge covers approximately 315 miles, taking cyclists across Sri Lanka’s natural beauty, iconic landmarks and vibrant cultural hotspots. It’s a big undertaking—especially when you’re not a seasoned cyclist, there are a LOT of inclines!

Judy describes herself as a total cycling novice, but that hasn’t stopped her from taking on something extraordinary for a cause she cares about.

We caught up with her before she left to find out how she’d been preparing, what she’s learned, and what advice she has for other beginners considering a charity cycle.

Are you an avid cyclist?

“No, definitely not! I class myself as a bikist, not a cyclist—as in, I can ride a bike!”

Why did you decide to sign up for the Sri Lanka Cycle?

“In all honesty, a moment of insanity! A friend I met during the Vietnam to Cambodia cycle suggested I join him. He said I’d love it and the hills would be fine. He now can’t take part…and the hills are definitely not fine! But a challenge isn’t a challenge unless it takes you out of your comfort zone. This one is way out of mine!”

What training have you been doing in preparation for your cycle challenge?

“I try to get out on my bike three consecutive days a week. One long ride, and two shorter ones that include inclines. I live in a very flat area, so finding hills is tough—I end up riding the same ones over and over, which is soooo boring!”

How has the training felt for you?

“Fascinating! I’ve hurt in places I shouldn’t hurt. I’ve been bitten by a horsefly that made me look like I’d had half a lip of filler. And I’ve had acne in places you shouldn’t have acne!

When I’m out with people, I’m fine—I explore new areas, chat, and generally cycle faster. But cycling alone can be tough. I get bored, fed up, and that’s when it becomes a chore. I’ve hated some of those days!”

Do you feel ready for the challenge?

“My butt thinks it’s ready…but my legs and the rest of me would rather stay at home in my PJ’s watching I’m a Celebrity!”

Are you taking part alone?

“No, my eldest son and his best friend are joining me. Although I’ve already warned him—once we’re there, I’m not his mum! If anything hurts, don’t come to me, just get on with it!

Who are you fundraising for?

“I’ve always supported Claire House, our local children’s hospice. My youngest son’s friend received support from the hospice before he passed away at just six years old. I came home, hugged my kids, felt grateful—and knew I wanted to make a difference. So far, I’ve raised just over £66k.”

Thanks Judy, it will be a challenge, but we are rooting for you and we hope you have an amazing time!

Feeling Inspired? Here’s How You Can Prepare for a Charity Cycle Challenge:

1. Start small and build gradually

You don’t need to be an athlete to begin—most people aren’t! Start with short, manageable rides and slowly increase distance and time.

2. Train consistently, not perfectly

Three sessions a week is a great goal. Hills, flat rides, and endurance days all help build confidence.

3. Train with others

Join local cycling groups or ride with friends—it makes the miles fly by.

4. Expect setbacks

Weather, illness, sore muscles… it’s all part of the journey. What matters is getting back out there and keep going!

5. Remember why you’re doing it

Your cause will keep you going when training feels tough. Fundraising gives your challenge purpose to push yourself through!

6. Believe that you can

Every single one of our participants starts somewhere—and many of them once thought they weren’t capable either. But they proved themselves wrong and often end up becoming an adventurer for life!

You CAN Do This!

Charity challenges aren’t about being the fastest, the fittest, or the most experienced.

They’re about pushing yourself, discovering what you’re capable of, and raising money that genuinely changes lives.

Judy is proof that beginners can take on extraordinary things—and so are the thousands of others who have crossed our finish lines.

Are you ready to take on a challenge and do something incredible for a cause you care about? We’d love to support you every step of the way.
